Approach

How I approach my work, and the teams I support.

A few principles
I tend to work by.

01

Be the user advocate.

Whether you're building a 0-1 brand, or finding market fit as a fledgling product, a deep understanding of the humans you're serving will always make clear what matters, what doesn't, what's missing, and introduces an objectivity required to evaluate design. As a designer, I believe we are their advocate.

02

Be vigilant and proactive.

A unified, consistent and clear experience is more than the sum of its parts. I generally frame a teams work from a user-centric POV, empowering all of us to be vigilant and proactive in co-developing and maintaining a unified user experience across teams.

03

Be proud of what you make.

Whether you're building a brand or a product, trust is earned little by little, with the craft and quality of what they experience. I believe that details matter, craft is queen, and quality is worth striving for.

04

Be clear on goals and flexible on tactics.

As a manager, I've found the most successful outcomes emerge from empowering my team rather than micromanaging. I like to build teams of talented people, and I trust them to know how to execute. I set clear goals, inspire action, and then support, unblock and coach.

05

Be transparent and candid.

Transparent and candid communication can streamline collaboration and inspire a sense of psychological safety. As a leader, I invite it by modeling it directly, or developing team norms that invite collaborative sharing, like critiques, 1:1s or retrospectives.

06

Be kind and have fun.

In my experience, healthy collaboration is fed by kindness and reciprocity and creating an environment that is welcoming to all. I also believe that creativity flourishes in environments that are fun, vibrant, supportive and enriching.
